For museum shots I just use the built in flash and go to manual. Usually 500-800iso and a manual setting around 30th/sec at 5.6. The built in flash has through the lens metering so it will only output what it needs. I usually compensate the flash about -.3 to .-7 under so it is not overpowering the photo.
For what I do museum shots are rarely printed big so the higher iso is not a factor. I don’t like the bulk of a external flash and that does look more professional and attracts attention.
For party and family shots I attach a flash, use the same settings, but bounce the flash off a ceiling like in these photos.
