Apologies,

But i would imagine Mr. Mohr himself would agree it was a bonehead move.

Point is, she was not 'shot down' like the National Geographic title would have you believe.

and anyone who accidentally lands a perfectly good airplane in a lake.., qualifies as 'bozo' esque!

They were built in halves like that at the factory, then joined in final assembly. Corsair had a vertical production break behind the cockpit.

2 flights of P-47's sent out to recon concentration camps attack if nazis are killing prisoners
Mohr dropped out of his flight to miss a smoke stack the rest of his flight were making a pass back towards town low and over the lake., he plowed into the lake while trying to rejoin his formation.

he almost drowned when pulled down by his chute.. no mae west worn.., german girls rowed out and threw him an oar..he passed out, they put him in a german hospital as a POW.

i could quote your interview with him back in 2005.., pretty much would say the same thing

Can not wait for the replay of this special on NG. Can not wait until they restore this puppy.., although could be years and years but the historical importance of this aircraft is astounding.

I wish them all the success.. wish i could wish them all the FUND$ necessary to pull this off as planned..,

hopefully someday I will be able to do that!!!!

Gentlemen, let's not foul this thread up too.

330th, lots of good pilots make mistakes. 'Bozo' is being interpreted as a knock on the entire character of the pilot in question, and is, to be fair, a bit harsh.

If I may be so bold, a single f#*kup does not a total f#8kup make.

I'll save you the trouble................
This was his 15th combat mission with the 511th FS and he was a 2Lt.
4. There were 2 flights of P-47s and the mission was a low-level armed recon of POW camps.
They were trying to determine if German units were attempting the kill their prisioners and they would attack if they saw evidence of this.
5. During a low pass he had to break off to miss a smoke stack and attempted to rejoin his flight which was low over the lake.
6. He touched the water during the rejoin and the engine quit making a making water necessary. He hit at 225-250 mph and the T-Bolt went straight down like a anvil.
7. He had no Mae West or raft and had given up trying to stay afloat and was actually under water going down when a boat showed up and someone suck a oar into the water which he managed to grab with the last of his strenght.

So he was low because of #1 the requirements of their mission and #2 because the he was sticking with his flight. He briefly left formation to avoid a smokestack. The flight was right on the water ( I'm told 25' or less) and the touched the surface most likely due to glare from the sun on the water.

Just plain amazing to consider that the AC will make it back into the air is more than plenty for me.

And that is independently of it's history :wink: :wink:

Including all the honors to it's original driver.... Which served & is well worth remembering.

That's funny, Jack gets pissed at the pilot issue, (Understandably so) I get pissed about the recovery comment. Unless you were at the recovery, you have no clue (echo, echo). the damage on the aircraft was limited to the wing sheet metal. The airplane weighed 2X what it did when it hit the water. the horizontal looks in tack under water because it was sitting on the silt. The closest anything got to the horizontal were some airbags put on the hoisting bar that goes through the fuselage just aft of the turbo charger. Next time I'm sure they will hire some under water riviters to make sure the airplane is flyable as soon as we get it out of the next lake. Oh don't forget, it was at the begining of the mission, Full of fuel, yes it was still in it, full of oil, still there, 1700 rounds of ammo, still there, on what was supposed to be about a 13000 pound airframe.
