Smoke Oil Pump

Who is using what in terms of a Smoke Oil Pump on a Standard Category T-6?
I need to replace an old Lear Romec pump from an installation made in the early 90s. I figure it will be easier with the 337 and FAA if there is a previously approved install.

we used a ADI pump, but I was never happy with the amount of oil it pumped. I can see if I still have a 337 around I can scan for you. Ours was not heavy in details, but it was approved.

Compro Aviation makes various smoker systems, most are used in ag aircraft as a drift finder but I think they have sold a few for T-6's as well. He (kevin?) might have a 337 for some of the installs.

I saw this site as well. Only drawback seems to be 12 volt pump.

Rich, it's been my experience on a T-6 that you want to be able to pump around a gallon per minute. On the bigger iron, such as the Sea Fury, you're lookin' for a gallon and a half per minute. That should give you some sort of reference.

The Smoking Airplanes pumps don't have near enough volume for the T-6. I know that at least one of the Team Aeroshell airplanes used to use a water pump from an RV camper. I've used old fuel boost pumps in the past, but I don't have access to the paperwork on them anymore to get you a copy of the part number and 337 forms. What's good about the electric fuel boost pumps is that they typically have regulators right on them, so you can tinker with just the right amount of flow that you need.

There ain't much that looks worse than a smoke system on an airplane that doesn't put out good smoke.

Exactly.
In the past I have seen systems with a plastic pump from Flojet. I no longer have access to a 337 for those installations.
It looks like Compro uses a Shureflo pump. I have sent an email and might have time to call later.

Hey Rich,
I have seen the Shurflo pumps used a lot. The system from smokingairplanes is using the shurflo pumps also. I actually have a spare pump (24v) at the airport however I am not there to just read the p/n for you. I have purchased them from Grainger and you can just google shurflo and pick out the one you want. Check out this link

I checked the 337 for one of the HFM's T-6's which has smoke, but alas, no part number was mentioned. And I didn't feel like standing on my head behind the rear seat trying to read the tag with a mirror and flashlight late in the day. Sorry :oops:
