I stopped for fuel on the way to Indy in Richmond, IN, and started to check out the airport. To my surprise this was there.

IIRC, circa 1995-6 the airport manager at Richmond was an ex-Naval aviator, so he got one for his field.
The media covered it being towed from W-P the 60 miles or so to Richmond, a straight shot on I-70, early one Sunday morning.

Richmond's an excellent little airport, ex-USAAF. Its FBO is still ensconced in the old tower/ops building, which is so reminiscent of old 8th Air Force movies, I like to fly there just for the pleasure of parking outside and walking up to it.
That was my first solo XC destination, back in 1990. I was writing avionics manuals for various navy airplanes (including A-6's) for a living at the time, and seeing that gate guard outside the fence, I was just gobsmacked.
Richmond would be a perfect field for an airshow, but I'm told that the ground access to the place sucks, and so attempts at having one there never were successful.

Thanks for posting the info and pictures of the A-6 Intruder. Need to save a few more from the shredder for future generations to see.
Fly Fast, Fly Safe,
