Trae, a few work days ago I was rummaging about over by hangar two and spotted the old display sign for the museum's PBY-5A (actually it was a Canso) and it has some major factual errors on it!

Steve S., the vast bulk of my PBY knowledge was generously provided to me by friends like avation historians David Legg, Ragnar Ragnarsson, and Louis Dorny and pilot Mark O'Connell who actually flew our PBY, and by the gang at www.pby@yahoogroups.com. , as well as PBY veterans like my dad.

Ah, that's how you know it's a museum placard.
Like a lot of other jobs, it's a deceptively tricky and skilled job to produce accurate, simple-looking and worthwhile museums signage. (And no, I don't know how, I just know some who do...)

JDK, I've already been asked for a clarification on information for new placards but that was before Ike. Most was okay but the old sign was 17 THOUSAND POUNDS off on the gross weight! Yikes! Should have let it float away.

A museum placard is like any other printing job. No matter how many people have looked it over and given it a greenlight, as soon as the job is done, someone walks in as says..."Why did you do it like that?! Didn't you see this glaring error!!!???" Never fails!!! 
Usually, the more expensive the printing job, the more likely the error is something that HAS to be done over and can't let it slide! With something historical such as this aircraft, so many different variables come into play, I would be afraid to say anything other than it's name, the fact that it took off and landed on water, and that it had two engines!

I wonder what happened to the two A-20 signs I did. Maybe they went with the airplane to California??
I managed to find two of the numerous models, or whats actually left of them that were in displays for the TAHF.
I know exactly what you're saying holedigger!
For the 15 aircraft I have to do some research on the actual museum's planes...History of that type, and the significance...and history on our bird.
Anyone want to addopt a plane?

Did you ever get any pictures of the USS Hornet display after the hurricane?

I will look through some of my pics Ryan when I get home. But I dont think I did. When I found it I could only see a section of it buried under a lot of debris. I saw it later on after it was dug out and it was severly rusted and bent. We did manage to find a few aircraft from it. Mostly the aircraft from the hangar deck.

Also the LSFM museum website.... www.lsfm.org has post IKE pics but I dont see any that have the Hornet in in. The museum has come along way since that day in Sept. But there is lots more work to be done.
