Yes, it is. Paid for by a WWII Dauntless vet, who will also underwrite the restoration. The Navy Museum will still own the aircraft though, so not all that much has changed perhaps. Still, it's great that she's going to be recovered. Three cheers for that!

I believe that the Air Museum's (POF) F4U-1A was originally built with a birdcage and later modified.
The example at TAM in Brazil is the ex-Harry Doan birdcage.

Hi Jerry... you are right that the ex-Harry Doan aircraft is now in the TAM museum in Brazil. It was originally an F4U-1A Bu.17995, which Harry restored as a birdcage. I am still doubtful that the Air Museum F4U-1A ever was a birdcage example, but it might have incorporated some of the earlier birdcage fittings before the line was completely changed.

That being said, there is a corsair project which incorporates singnificant chunks of a birdcage corsair. This is, I believe, F4U-1A 49956, which was a former RNZAF example that actually has the rear fuselage from a birdcage example. It is essentially a collection of parts gathered by Ross Jowitt over many years. I hope the owner restores her as a birdcage though.

Harry himself told me that he purchased this ac from Lazrov Salvage in Memphis. At least i think this is the one he was talking about.
