Indonesian Warbirds (and Hi from Jakarta)

MIG 17 and others

I met a retired Indo Air Force Mig 17 pilot and as they had versions from Russia , Poland , Czech , China (and maybe Romania, I forget now) he surprised me by saying that he actually preferred the chinese built version as it had more performance as it was a built a bit lighter than the others.

He also flew the Mig 15 UTI and Mig 19 but he preferred the handling qualities of the Mig 17, he didn't like the Mig 15 UTI.

Any Mig 17 guys out there that could comment on this ?

My office neighbour at the airport is a retired Navy pilot and he described the Fairey Gannett ASW aircraft as a flying brick , not nice to fly in his opinion.

Note: if you look at the cruise missiles under the wing of the TU-16 on the 1st page of this post they are based on the Mig 15 UTI

Thank you ,have been looking for a while for the markings of these planes.

The green small plane is a Ki-79(between P-51D & B-25) which is a 2 seat Ki-27 as daveymac82c said.
They used these after WW2 as a trainer.

LOVE THE JEEP PICS!! I drive Jeep exclusively....Jeeps and Warbirds, 2 of my fave things (along with flyfishing)....love the J-20 with the jet engine, and you got some serious mudders on the CJ-2A....

Me too, I have a CJ-7 , the J20 and the Willys .

Where do you find the time to go fishing with all that Jeep maintenance that needs to be done ?

Hi Tony and another welcome to WIX!

Have you had the opportunity to check out any wartime wreck sites? I've seen a photo somewhere online of a nearly intact B-24 (fuselage broken aft of the wings) sitting on top of a mountain in Java; do you have any info on that one?

Hi Chris,

Since I started the business I haven't had time to scratch myself, for example it's a public holiday today and in the office as usual.

I have the Jeeps so when things settle down it would be nice to go on some 'missions' with the Jeeps and find some of these sites. The mountains and in the sea would be the few places to still find wrecks as anything accessible would have been cut up for scrap.

Hello Tony,

There is a little mystery that i hope you may help solve.

In the early 80s, the military recovered 4 wrecks from Babo airfield : A zeke, an Oscar, a Sonia and a Lily bomber.

The first 3 have since long been cosmetically restored and put on display in the Air force Museum but nothing has ever be seen or heard about the Ki-48 Lily.

Here is a photo (source unknown) of the bomber before recovery in the 70s'.

Can you help ?

Your Lily was moved from Babo to Biak to Yogyakarta for the Indonesian Air Force Musuem , it must be in storage

I asked during my 2 visits there in 2000 & 2002 but nobody knew anything about it.

Hoped you may have known more with your contacts in the AF.

My guess then is it has probably been scrapped or locked away and forgotten in one of the many stores there, if I find out anything I'll post it here.

One of the engineers I know has a pretty good handle on the older aircraft as he looks after the Air Force Dakota , I'll be seeing him sometime this week.

Thanks for the welcome Jesse , I guess a warbird missionary/mercenary is probably more accurate as this is my only source of income now and I have 10 staff on the payroll to pay each month
