Randy,
Here is what the FAA says
61.60 Change of address.
The holder of a pilot, flight instructor, or ground instructor certificate who has made a change in permanent mailing address may not, after 30 days from that date, exercise the privileges of the certificate unless the holder has notified in writing the FAA, Airman Certification Branch, P.O. Box 25082, Oklahoma City, OK 73125, of the new permanent mailing address, or if the permanent mailing address includes a post office box number, then the holder's current residential address

if all else fails, contact the FAA rep over there. I know there is such a critter, they are like cockroaches, they are everywhere.

My point is that I have a current address with the FAA -- it is my overseas APO address.

My drivers license, however, is from the state which I was last stationed in -- Georgia. Since I'm now in the UK, I don't live at the address or in the state which my drivers license was issued.

Thus, if they're going to a drivers license database to obtain a photo for the new Airman Certificate, the FAA is going to have some trouble doing that. The last time I checked, the state of "APO-AE" doesn't issue drivers licenses.

That is the problem.

Randy,

My understanding of this is that some states have voluntarily linked the DMV photo database of their state. If they have linked and the applicant has a valid license photo in the database, no other photo submission is required. If not, you simply have to go through the manual photo submission process. Good Luck, I remember everything being a pain in the A when I had an APO address years ago.

Randy, You have the option of mailing to an address other than your "Home of Record" on the FAA website. As for your DL and HOR not being the same state, that has not been a factor for anyone I know who got new tickets mailed.

Also for anyone who plans to fly ICAO with US tickets, and that means Canada, Mexico, Bahamas too, don't forget to get the English Proficiency rating on your new ticket. Made all us airliner types get that on, even though the PTS starting at Private has the requirement "must be able to read, speak and understand" english.

It's been a few years since I switched over to the plastic type cards. I don't remember having to give them a photo. Any of the certificates I have seen don't have photos on them either.

At the bottom of the page, you can create a new account "Request a new account" When you go to update your certificate, they also give you an option to use a passport photo. You don't have to live at the address, it just has to be a mailing address.

I think this should be a 'sticky' here. Most of us have one or more FAA certificates.

By registering for an online account, I assume that will also make it easier for the Airman Cert Branch to contact you about matters like this.

As pointed out in a prior post, instead of requesting a "replacement" certificate, I clicked the "Remove your SSN as Certificate Number" link, and I was not charged the $2 fee to get a 'new' - not replacement - certificate. I'm assuming I'll get the credit card variety ...

Registering for an account and filling out the basic data took all of 3 minutes - yes, you can use your state's DL database OR a passport photo - just have the number handy. I got this message upon completion, so I guess I'm good to go ...

Your request to have SSN removed from your certificate(s) has been accepted. You should receive your certificate(s) in approximately two weeks.

Thanks for making us aware of this -

Wade

Perfect.

I just did what Wade posted, removed my SSN as certificate ID, and it allowed me to link to my Passport as ID. Maybe they'll use a scan of the Passport photo.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Randy, they have a form to change from your SS# to a given number and not your passport. You might given a email to ask about it. If needed I can scan it for you and send it via email. Also, no photo's are needed.....

Guys, they don't actually put your picture on the new card. They just link to it on their database. You will, however, have Wilbur and Orville on your new certificate. I understand that has caused some consternation when TSA types look at the license and realize that the individual looks NOTHING like the picture on the license ! :o

Lynn - I think that's what I (and Randy) did when we clicked the link to "request a new certificate that does not use our SSNs as the identifying number". I used my state's DL number to, evidently, allow the FAA to have access to my, uh, "mug shot". Same with the passport picture for Randy. I think a 'random' certificate number will be assigned to the 'new' certificates in both cases rather than my DL number or Randy's passport number - those numbers can be compromised just as easily as a SSN these days.

Right - yes, understood. Evidently the state and passport photos are all "online" and an access link needed to be established for "ID" purposes only, but not on the actual card (which would require a new hardcopy card be issued every 4-5 years or so). I assume when/if FAA eyes need to be on the actual picture, either next week or 35 years from now, the current pic will pop up on their screens ... assuming you have not moved, in which case of course you'll have to 'update' your online account again.

Thanks guys,

Just changed my Pilot and A&P tickets (no photos) but what about my I.A. ticket, It still has my "old" S.S. number.
Should I go to the FSDO or wait until the I.A. meeting next month?

Thanks, Phil
