PAAVille Wake Island

Sun Jan 25, 2009 9:01 am

Greetings,
While working on a project i have been searching for pictures of the City PAA built on Wake island during the late 30's. I have not had much luck but I did stumble upon these photos that I thought some of you might find of interest. I especially like the photo with the PAA Scooter.

As an aside, if anyone happens to know where I can find some good images of PAAVille while it was a going concern, please let me know.

Thanks,
Arty

These are not my photos, and if I am in violation of anything, please let me know.

Thank you so much. My late father was PanAm and spent a lot of time there during the piston era. He used to walk the road during long layovers & pick up nuts, bolts & other hardware left over from the military & take it home to his shop.
They used to let dependents work summers there and I came close to doing that in '63, but ended up in Anchorage instead. Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence & I have long wondered what it would have been like. They used to shoot sharks right off of the pier.

Thanks Tom, I am glad you liked the pictures.

In the last photo it looks like the number 2 engine is very....drippy... Any idea what happened? Is it a trick of the light? Or is it rust proofing the concrete below?

Just curious,
Arty

Are those buildings on land across the bay? If so what are they?

I was talking to my dad tonight about these pictures. He was a FEO for Pan Am and went there a lot. He doesn't remember a city per se but more like a bunch of barracks. He said there was also a small infirmery too, which he had to use one night when he cut his hand pretty badly on a window.
I'd love to see more if you got 'em.

Interesting find - thanks! There's some broader images of PAAville on:

The following page has more images too - Wake Island is quite beautiful from the air.

Don't know if you saw those but just in case....

Thanks for the link! Mark
