Drove by the 8th Air Force museum in Lousiana a couple of days ago. Maybe the threat of loosing the planes is spurring some action. While most of the planes need a lot of work, some had work in progress.


The T-33 was pulled up behind the museum and being painted.

It's amazing what the USAF has on display ... sitting outside slowly leaving us one atom at at time...

There is improvement showing.

The C-47 has been worked on and repainted recently.

Looks like the Vulcan has new paint too.

Can someone please explain the logic that allows a P-51 to sit outside in this day and age ? :cry:

Excellant question! I guess for the same reason that a P-51 sits outside in crap weather in Wisconsin, a Hellcat sits outside at Andrews AFB and a Corsair sits outside in Michigan. Not a good situation at all!

Pat, I've actually discussed the Hellcat at Andrews with the Navy personnel who control such things. That "aircraft" is a Hellcat in name only. There are decidedly Hellcat parts that make up the airframe but it also contains fabricated parts that are definitely nonairworthy. The whole thing was constructed for exactly for the job it is doing.

They will be happy to get it inside as soon as you help them put up their building they are working on getting. It sucks that she is outside I agree, but at least they saved it.
