Great action shot there Jack.

To be pedantic for a moment, as it's an RNZAF P-40N, it is a Kittyhawk, all our P-40's were designated as Kittyhawk and not Warhawk.

Looks like a late model canopy, which would make it a P-40N model !

Is that a "Spiral" on the spinner or is that just the way the picture looks??

Powerful shot though, can almost hear thta allison rumbling down the runway.

I know you got more but all I gotta do is look in my one book to find them. :wink:

Talk about pedantic. Once when I went to the Yanks museum in the 80s, the guy who ran the place -- I forget his name, many of you knew him, he's been mentioned here many times -- objected when I made an offhand reference to the museum's Warhawk. "Warhawk? What's a Warhawk? Never heard of that." He was trying to make the point that even the USAAC/AAF never officially used that name for the P-40. I never bothered to look into it enough to find out if he was correct or not.

I believe that this P-40 is in fact P-40N -5 ,NZ3177. Operated by No.4 SU between November 1943 and March 1944. Coded 'A'

It gained a kill over an A6M on 9 January 1944 over Rabaul During its time with 17 (F)Sqdn RNZAF.Then went to 19 Sqdn (F) RNZAF.

Crash landed at Pallikulo Airfield on 03 May 1944 after electrical and hydraulic failure. Written off books at Espiritu Santo.

It's a N. I looked at the tiff file version for a better look.
I've got a great shot of ace S/L Herrick in his M somewhere also.

The sliding Canopy, gives it away as a 'N' model !
All other ealier models had the birdcage style Canopy
