hard to say without seeing what the approach before the photo - i'd guess Cut the power - seem like if you firewall it with the rudder as is you'd be into the island with two wings full of rockets.

BUT with no flight time to back it up I am just spitting into the wind.

Eject! Eject! Eject!

Sorry, not an option. Guess I'd chop power, got a couple more wires in front of me. A bit hairy for sure!

Do we know the actual outcome of this adventure?

Are you kiddin'? That Marine's just making a "show pass" to highlight how well USMC pilots manage the finely balanced controls of the U-bird. Note how he's also purposely placed his plane at a precise angle so as not to expose the Bureau Number of his F4U-4B to overly curious photographers and future historians. Crafty guys, those Marines!

I like the LSO's body language. Its like he's saying "WTF is wrong with that guy?"

Adding power on a straight deck CV just makes for a larger fireball

Since he is where he is, he's already cut power and after that it's verboten to add it back. All that's left to do is keep it straight and get the tail down enough to pick up a wire but not float (much less balloon) into the barriers, although he should be slow enough now not to. No problem. However, if worse comes to worse, the LSO will say to the Boss, "He looked okay when he went by me."

His ailerons look neutral, does that mean anything? He doesn't look too concerned, at any rate!
