I'm sure someone knows though!

Got this via e-mail as part of a Powerpoint file of "amazing photos." Anyone know more or have a photo credit?

Really cool shot... thanks for posting.... looks decidedly Grumman to me... an Avenger, perhaps?

Cheers,
Richard

Could it be a Spitfire?

There is more than a hint of an eliptical wing there, however the tips are either missing or a clipped wing version if it was.

I was thinking the same thing, looks very Spitfire-ish (Seafire?). Or maybe a Firefly?

Ailerons too big and in wrong place, leading edge taper should be approximately the same as the trailing edge and the wing span is too small. Should be a marked parallel chord root section if it was an Avenger.

The top of the fuselage could be fairly rotted making it look like there is a longer cockpit than there was.

OK chaps the floor is open.

OK...I see what you mean by the leading edge taper. I withdraw my first impression. A second will follow shortly.

For me the wing edge is too straight to be a spit. Just my 2 cent...

Interesting, can you give us a hint why not?

If not, could the clue lay in the apparent missing panels on the wings? Might they be gun panel covers missing?

Would the lack of visible Ailerons point to fabric covered surfaces long since consumed?

One person suggested a P-40 which could then suggest a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver which had a similar wing. TBY and SB2A are also possibilities

Also, where was his photo taken ? Hawaii, Bahamas, Caribbean...??
