Hoping some of you out there can assist me with a little bit of a project. Presently trying to put together a database on P-40's, with when built, C/N, serial etc. Whilst I have basic info, I'm hoping that you could assist with any additional info (such as unit allocations of aircraft) and photos. I have a large no of photos and am trying to locate ones showing US training unit aircraft of which I have been only able to find a small number.

Additionally does anyone have a full listing of codes and related units/airfields for training units in the US.

Have you started with Joe Baugher's website? That will give you all of the serial numbers and constructor numbers that you need to get going. Once you've got that, you can cross reference with the registry here to see which ones are survivors, and you'll have no problems getting photos here for all of those survivors just for your own personal use. At that point, you can start collecting. If you've got yourself organized with a spreadsheet and the s/n and c/n, you'll be surprised at how fast you start stacking up photos. I've been doing this with Tulsa-built B-24s, and already have photos of about 25% of them.

I'd say you start at the AAIR database.....

the details to the accidents give much information on assignments, homebase, pilots involved, damage sustained, location, etc.

in 'database' search, just enter "P-40" in the 'Aircraft Type' field and you will receive hundreds of records.....

Hi Gents

Thanks for the info. As I said I have the basics, list produce below on what I already have.

British Aircraft Cards
Australian Aircraft Cards
Canadian Aircraft Cards
US IRC's (all bar the P-40N-30 and N-35).
UK Accident Cards
Some of the US accident cards

RAAF Sqdn Histories
RAF Sqdn Histories
RCAF Sqdn Histories
30+ US Sqdn Histories.

All told about 81 Microfilms, as well as copies of numerous other docs. What I was hoping is that someone might have some US based aircraft, of which I have been unable to find many photos (at last count I have over 3000 photos of P-40's - both originals, copies and high res scans - but only about 10 US based aircraft).

Additionally does anyone know the likely content of the Form 34's for US based Units (are these likely to contain a decent amount of information or just a brush over?)

You might go to the Air Force History office at Maxwell AFB and download this 90Mb pdf.

It lists squadrons, wings, groups etc....types operated and the like.
