Placed on US civil register as N22897

It is Mk.XVI SL542 (Supermarine Spitfire)

Found Around Quebec

The N number was N2289J not 22897 and was cancelled in June.

I would quibble it was found around Quebec. Since it wasn't lost, I'm not sure how it could be found, but...

Not withstanding what the FAA and Transport Canada paperwork may say, it has been in Quebec for years. That was far from secret.

Yes my apologies, I am finding out more and more and it was my fault for jumping the gun on this. My apologies to all but it is still an interesting story to follow. Thank you to everyone who has given more info on it!

On behalf of a Canadian entrepreneur, I seem to remember setting up a trade for this Spitfire in exchange for a Russian Hampden crash relic with the RAF Museum back in 1992/3.

It was sold on later in 1993 to a representative of Jet-Cap in Florida and on again by them to Anthony Gurak in 1995. Restoration work commenced at Harry Stenger's Bartow Florida facility but the aircraft was withdrawn to the Quebec area after a couple of years or so...were it got lost. :)

Arrival at Skysport Engineering, UK, for storage 6 Feb 1993. Note the use of strops rather than chains to lift it.

The fin markings are not THE original markings are they? That doesn't seem likely on a gate guardian.

Not the original paint.

From my image files that is about the 8th painting.
