No I wasn't there, but a good friend was. The board of the AFA dismissed his 6 claims in the AVG , at least one board number was there, and they said Joe Foss is the leading Marine ace. I beleive them.

I doon't doubt that you are right, however the USMC has not done the same. So according to the USMC it is still Boyington as far as I know.

Geez Chris,
The Marines couldn't say Boyington was #3 being Foss and Hanson any more than the AF could start the CY or the Belle weren't first. It's not about kills, medals, valor, courage or any of the like. It's about TV, Movies, books PR and most above all it's about image.

Sure they could. First of CY was first according to the rules set by NACA and the USAF. Everyone new the score(including Mr. Welch) No recording equipment, no sound barrier. That was straight from NACA. And according to the NMUSAF web site the Belle was the second B-17 to complete it's tour of duty, but the first to do so and return home.
