I just finished watching (sort of) the Blue Angels @ the SEAFAIR hydroplane races this afternoon (I've been watching them since they first flew straight winged aircraft, F9F-2's so I don't get a big buzz out of seeing the same stuff for 55 years in a row) and I wonder why neither the Blues or the 'Birds use colored smoke?
Plain old white is pretty much mayonnaise on wonder bread when the British, French, Italians, and other teams all use color. And given todays high thin overcast for the races, colored smoke would make them easier to see against stark white skies.
And don't reply 'tradition' this ain't Fiddler on the Roof'

Tevye states it's simply military spending cutback.

I can tell you from having pulled a smoke oil tank out of a ex Skytypers SNJ-2, the dye they use to color the smoke is MESSY, and does it stain. By the time I got the tank out, you would have thought I slaughtered a couple of cows, because of all the red on the floor.

MAZALTOV!
Is that the newest version of the M-! that he's road testing in your post?

As far as making a mess, if it makes the show more attractive, who cares? There's a lot of things that go on in the military you don't know about because you don't need to know about them just the end results. :?

Besides, I'm pretty sure the Blues don't yank out their smoke oil tank @ every 50 HR. check-
