The recent thread on the P-51 "Color Me Gone" got me thinking. Many people remarked how much they liked the paint scheme. So let's hear some of your favorite historically in-accurate paint schemes on warbirds. I'm not talking about the closest rendition of your favorite WWII unit's colors. Here is mine:

The late Spencer Flack's all-red stable of Spitfire XIV G-FIRE, Sea Fury G-FURY and Hunter G-HUNT. They looked absolutely stunning, especially with all 3 in formation!

My fave for sheer inaccuracy, but who cares ... EAA's P-64, with its faux-prewar, Peashooterish paint scheme ...

Good one, Randy. As a kid, the T-6 racer, The Excorsist, was one of my favorites. I can't find a picture of it either. I may be wrong, but I think it was those two that had a mid-air in 1979(?) in Reno?

How can a post war civil scheme be ever inaccurate? My favorite scheme on a Mustang is Paul Mantz's NX1204. That's the way it looked historicaly at one point in its career. Is it's appearance today inaccurate?

The current trend toward more authentic military wasn't always the case of what constitutes a"restoration". Fashion is changing all the time. Someday some of the garrish schemes of recent past may become the new criteria for what is viewed as "historic"!!

Bob Love's Mustang Jolly Roger.
I don't have a picture so I'll let someone else dig one up.
I always liked that scheme.

I'm not sure if I'm breaking copyright rules or not, posting this picture, but I found it on this website, http://www.thehomepylon.net/The_Events/ ... index.html
This site has some neat ol' shots and history of some old air racing events. I recommend anyone interested in air racing to check it out.

Anyway, to follow up on my previous thread, here's the Exorcist...

Image

"Don DeWalt's beautiful SNJ racer, "Exorcist," Race 74, taxiing out for practice laps at the United States Air Racing Association (USARA) Spring Symposium, in April, 1977.
DeWalt was lost in this aircraft the following year when he collided with Dr. Dimitri Prian during an AT-6 heat race at the 1978 Reno National Championship Air Races. Prian also died in the collision."
