A lot of "stuff" left here long before the Navy or any local officials (or the NHC/Pepsi-Cola) either knew or cared about what was here at China Lake. B-29's were just targets. Once blown up, they were sold for scrap. The ones that made it off range are the lucky ones.

What's left ain't much and I doubt even your Congress Critter could break one loose very easy........even then actually getting it in your posession might require an act of your favorite Diety.

Man..when I hear things like 2 to 5 million to get a B-29 up and running, it seems like a lot. Then I hear about movie stars spending hundreds of thousands on a party, or millions for some home they'll spend maybe a week in during a given year.
Last year a (20-something) co-worker and I were taking about some multi-bazzillion dollar lottery jackpot, and he asked what I'd do with the cash if I won. I said I'd give a few mil to the Fifi project, and he was baffled. He couldn't figure out why I'd want to spend that much on some old junk airplane when I could buy a snazzy new corporate jet for less. I tried to explain the historical aspect of Fifi, but he just didn't get it. And I suppose that's exactly why warbirds need to be preserved, flown, and kept in the public conciousness. Most of today's kids can't even tell you when WWII was or what it was about (although they'll quickly condemn our use of nukes on Japan.)

Well considering the B-29 was one of the most complex/advanced aircraft of WWII. A B-17 is pretty simple in comparison.

Oh, I wasn't complaining about the cost itself..when you consider taking a disassembled/stripped hulk and turning it into a living, breathing B-29, five million sounds pretty cheap.
