Any cool aviation things to do near Raleigh N.C.?

I am vacationing with some friends in a week down in N.C. I am driving from Pittsburgh to Emerald Isle N.C. and back. I was wondering what I should see. I am going to Kills Devil Hill already.

You'll be awfully close to Cherry Point. Their air show is the weekend of June 6-8 (http://www.cherrypointairshow.com/). Naturally, you'll be a bit early. I go up the coast a bit (Outer Banks) and we usually see Hornets buzzing up and down the coast almost daily.

Depending on how far you are willing to travel, there are a couple of places near Raleigh:

Asheboro has a museum (has been re-named, used to be the Peddycord Foundation for Aircraft Preservation) that I belive is now the Carolinas Aviation Museum.

Winston Salem airport, IIRC has several 1950s jets lined alongside the airport fence (I suggest you check aerial visuals for accurate location).

If you can make it to Ft. Bragg, there are aircraft on display, as well as a couple of great museums in-base.

The Carolinas Aviation Museum is in Charlotte, about 3 hours away. The museum in Asheboro is the North Carolina Aviation Museum. I think it's actually at the Moore County Airport.

I've not been to the one in Asheboro, but the Charlotte museum is pretty good.

You might be able to get to see the ones at Seymour-Johnson AFB, near Goldsboro, with prior permission. Contact the base Public Affairs office.

There's an F-86 in Goldsboro.

As was said above, check Mike Henniger's site "AerialVisuals".

You'll need to get permission to access the aircraft at Ft. Bragg as well since they are on base property. Also, the P-40 that was on a pole on base is no longer there. It was moved when the A-10 squadron was relocated down South, (Alabama? Mississippi?) The Airbone and Special Ops Museum is located in downtown Fayetteville and is open to the public.

In Goldsboro, there was a Ford Trimotor under restoration, but I do not know the status of it or the whereabouts currently.

The CAF Carolinas Wing is located at the Moore County Airport and they have a Lysander. The Asheboro museum is not at the Moore County airport--it's in Asheboro. I recommend Sunday brunch at the Pinehurst No. 2 golf course--it's been a few years but it was not outrageously priced and the course grounds were very nice (at least to a non-golfer.)

There used to be an antique aircraft selling rides at Kill Devil Hills. I can't remember if it's a Stearman or some other bipe. Aerial tours of the Outer Banks were also offered there, flying down to the Hattaras Lighthouse and turning back.

Enjoy your stay on the Outer Banks. Don't forget your fishing pole.
