Correct me if I'm wrong, but it wasn't built as a test aircraft and was delivered with a top turret. I understand they don't have the time/resources or money to strip and re-paint this aircraft at the present time but it's my understanding that the NASM has no intention to ever do so.
I'm a big advocate of displaying them "as is" until they can be rotated into restoration (i.e.
Swoose), I'm just not a big fan of the new trend of leaving chipped up old paint "as is" unless the aircraft has a unique and historically significant background like
Flak Bait. In my opinion, the museums P-38 needs a strip and re-paint. Any thoughts/differing opinions...
