1980 was my first CAF airshow....I had a gazillion pictures from my 2 days at Harlengen with my newly aquired Mamiya 35MM camera...
If the cockroaches in southern Texas had wings, I believe they would have used live ammo in the airshow......My favorite was Bob Hoover...Art Scholl....and watching FIFI do the flyby with Gen. Paul Tibbets at the helm.
I loved it when the pilots of DELTA REBEL stopped the B-17 in front of the stands after the Tora Tora flight, and stood on the brakes..throttled up, and brought the tail off the ground..litterally flying her in place ..way cool!
If memory serves...I think that they had to QEC the engine on the Catalina...
Carolyn was almost done with a major O.H....got to climb in her...Saw the A-20 in flight..first and only time.....Anybody remember the Mosquito rotting away behind the hangers?
Sorry to say that I lost all my photos due to house fire...And yes..Charlene, Doc. and their son flew Chuckie to CAF 80...but I believe that her first showing was at Howards place in Breckenridge shortly before........CRS?

That's a good question. I've seen the paperwork for it here (or just a few items that don't say much), and I've often wondered where it went as well. There are actually quite a few of those "not much information" documents about all kinds of cool airplanes that were at one time in the CAF's possession that nobody seems to know about.

Ober, I thought you were one of those "old timers" that knew dang near everything about the old CAF. I'm kind of surprised you don't know about the Owl or some of the other lesser known airplanes.

Not quiet that old (joined in '83) but never knew about that one. Wish we could see the rest of that board. Maybe it was just pieces like the Mosquito. (Not the four legged one)

The Owl was 40-2746 now at Pima Arizona after passing through Yanks and Tallichet. I have pics of it shortly after arrival in Chino I will try and dig them out.

Hi Gary,

Here you go the short history of the Owl.


The CAF got it 1974 it was sort of Airworthy I think either Lefty flew it or Don, but I'm not sure who did. You guys held on to it till 84 when you sold it to Yankee. They didn't really do anything with it. In 1987 they traded it for David Tallichet's SB2C that he had.

Its now on display at PIMA.

Mudge, the Owl we're talking about is only on the status board that is pictured. There is no photo of the actual airplane on this thread.......although I'm sure someone reading this will be glad to post one. (Hint, hint)
