Been PM'ing a few friends here about the differences between "authoring" posts and "replying" to posts. My personal opinion is that "authoring' posts show me that someone is more willing to open themselves to accept praise, take criticism, sometimes receive personal attacks and unfortunately, some very harsh PM's. I've been there and most times I could care less, unless it's one of my now .... "imfamous" ... "what if" posts ... haha. I really get hammered with one of those., but my point is this:

I think it shows a lot of "brass b*lls" to author any post here on WIX, I think the authors of posts really have so much more to lose as far as posting anything on this big, huge WWW. Luckily for all us members of WIX, we have a vast majority of good people who respect and admire authors here. I know many times I have doubts about authoring a post, simply because I'm just a simple warbird lover who, unfortunately, is not as educated in the warbird world as many of you are, but in my defense toward authoring posts, "If I don't ask, I'll never learn much about what really interests me here", I'll take a hit if I ask a dumb question, as long as I can ask a few good ones too. I may lose my temper every now and then because of stupidity on my part, but I still sleep well at night and I like the idea of so many people here seemingly excepting of my "good with the bad" posts. I do have to say though that I have had a few MP's from folks who feel intimidated and don't feel comfortable authoring posts for fear of many things. I say, don't worry about a thing, authoring a post shows me a leader, as opposed to a follower. But seriously, authoring a post may offend one or two uptight people, but usually is thoroughly enjoyed by hundreds. Just look at the number of hits per posts. Someone seems to enjoy them.

Posting replies is too easy and for WIMPS!!!!, you want to be a MAN!!!! .... start authoring some good posts .... hahahaha  , I'm getting tired of coming up with all the good ones.

It's slow on WIX right now, use some imagination ... just stay away from those "WHAT IF" posts .... they're a killer ....

And what is all this "king of posting" about ... do you get a trophy at the end of the year if you author the most posts? .... Quality baby, not quantity, unless your name is Jack Cook ...

Hey Hellcat,

I can't speak for anyone, but I am not really worried about authoring threads due to the possibility of people beating up on me.

The only thing that stops me from posting is my lack of knowledge (as I don't have too many facts or news to share) and my inability to come up with challenging or thought inspiring questions.

I sincerely hope that people aren't affraid to post on WIX. In my experience even if I do ask a stupid question, the responses are almost always civil and don't include the line "You individual of questionable judgement" at the end of them.

For instance... I have a question about those big black things on the bottom of Lancasters, like S for Sugar. I imagine there's some kind of navigation equipment in them, but I have no clue. How come there was never a turret up in there?

Cheers,

David

What is with all the threads about threads lately. All of this intospective talk about posting is really giving the whole posting thing more credit than it is due. We are talking about some people posting threads on a warbirds message board. It really isn't rocket surgery we are involved with here. How about we all just start talking about warbirds again.

Reasonable question, perhaps.

It's the internet, not mortal combat! If someone finds it hard going, there's the 'off' switch. Sometimes we make a bit to much fuss about what is, essentially, a virtual bar.

As to authoring posts, some of us are involved on a practical basis, and can't just post something for fun as it may detract from the day job. However, sometimes those people can respond to a question, or clarify a misconception. It's also great fun to find a newbie and beat him senseless and leave the bloody carcase behind the bike shed. Ooops, no, that slipped out.

I don't start many threads because as a professional writer (i.e. I get paid for it) I shouldn't spoil my work by breaching it on the web. Likewise I don't go on about what I'm working on, or advertise what we've published, as that would be a bit inappropriate as free advertising. However I've been clear about the organisations I'm involved with, so people know who I am. Likewise not everyone who posts here is as clear about their involvement, and that legitimate too. We do get the full SP from some people, which is great, and unlike an editorially controlled print medium, we do also get to hear some people who haven't a clue but do have a keyboard. It's worth sorting the wheat from the chaff though.

Most of us (and I'm certainly included here) appreciate however much we know, there's plenty more to learn, and polite, constructive debate is an excellent medium. The adjectives matter. The posters I respect aren't those who agree with me, but those who I can disagree with but accept the difference - and those who can convince by rational argument and evidence that something's 'true'.

I do try and provide constructive feedback as a return for the help that many WIX members have rendered me, and to support the forum, as a thanks to Scott for his efforts since way back (the WW days). Likewise DaveM2 and Tim Savage (among other publishers and authors) make contributions when they can, which we should be grateful for. We don't get paid for free news and views.

Just a few thoughts.

There's some interesting playing with ideas there, not everyone likes the same areas in WIX.

No one's forced to read everything, and there's no exam, so you can just skip it Tom... ;)

Well, I'm a "nobody" who posted this in another thread but was totally ignored. I don't know if I offended Mr. Greenwood with my initial joke or if the question was too difficult. No matter what, "Griffon" is now spelt correctly but I have not yet decided if I will bother asking questions anymore.

Are you kidding, i enjoy throwing up new posts, and grant it, lots of mine are information and some are for parts questions, but if you dont have tough skin, you might feel offended at times, and all i can say is get thicker skin, those of us current and former military men and women will tell you, you need the thick skin to survive! hahaha

Everyone should post, not just reply, youll learn more! Throw your ideas out there!

There's a BIG difference in posting just for the sake of posting ( this thread an example) and actually having something relevant and of interest to say.

So when did the exchange of ideas and information become a Contest or judgment of manhood. If someone has a question or info to share they author and if someone has an answer they post. As long at they are not abusive to people life on the board should be good.

Lets not overthink this thing folks- there are much more serious problems out there in the world- LIke dealing with people that come up to the B17 at an airshow and ask if it "is this a B52"(Yep-new Stealth Version), "is it real"(Full Size balsa wood Replica), and "how did you get it here"(Fed Ex).

Now anybody have any more old airshow pics to post- those are much more fun.
Later
