Warbird Information Exchange

Remember when you could walk onto an airport and look at warbirds up close and personal?

My cousin sent be a disc of photos from when we did just that at Mt. Palomar, CA 1976. I am attaching a few of the 106 scans. Let me know what if anything else you might like to see more of.

I could be wrong, but I believe the airport pictures are from Ramona.

With all due respect, although I may have done some chemical research in those days, my cousin lived in Oceanside. One day whilst "boogie boarding" we saw and heard this amazing impromtu show up in the hills. I asked, where was the airport and my cousin said, "oh that's Mt. Palomar"

So, in my salt water stuper, away we went and I can assure you, ask Steve Hinton, we were at Palomar.

P-38 at Palomar February 1977...Sad to say this aircraft is no longer with us.


Not sure why the photo is not posting. I have more color shots of Palomar back in the 70's

Hey, I'd still rather have all that snow than the ice we had up here Monday night. My teenage son and I managed to ride the minivan right off Hwy 23...rolled over twice and came to rest on the roof (The van's totaled, but we walked away with bumps and scrapes).

Sorry 'bout that. It's kind of a rural-Wisconsin driving thing: Either you've hit a white-tailed deer or had a rollover. Some of us luckier types have had both. Seriously, I'm just glad we didn't hurt anyone else and are able to joke about it after the fact. Now I'm just waiting for the pathetic excuse of a compensation check from the insurance claims agent.

I think they were taken at what is actually the McClellan-Palomar Airport at Carlsbad, CA (KCRQ). Note the glideslope antenna in the background of the B-25 photo....ILS at CRQ, no ILS at Ramona.

Used to be a nice airport for warbird watching, including the 2nd floor airport cafe with a great view of many nice things. Just below was, I think, Don Martin's Marginal Airmotive which had a P-47, P-40, and P-38 that was being worked on at one time or another. Had the semi-derelict B-25 that later became "Old Glory" on the other side of the hangar also:



And you never knew what was going to pull up to the pumps on any given day. Airport's since been "improved." Cafe's gone; airplanes are gone; no fun anymore.

Was that Mike Retkie's Hellcat? Glad you are OK Dan.

The Hellcat is still Tom Freidkin's. It has been at POF and painted in British FAA markings with invasion stripes IIRC.
Brandon, is it still there? Many of his aircraft are displayed at POF at Chino. He has a display hangar at the museum as he is a big supporter.
