PBY-5A FAW-4 taking off from Massacre Bay, Attu alongside the seaplane tender USS Casco in May 1943. The Casco had recently been returned to duty after being torpedoed by the Japanese sub RO-61 in Aug 1942 but the sub was sunk shortly afterwards by VP-42 Cats and the USS Reid.

Jack,

did the torpedo 'hole' the hull without exploding? it is hard to imagine a CAT would be repaired after , or even survive being torpedoed?

from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Casco_%28AVP-12%29

"While lying at anchor in Nazan Bay on 30 August, she was torpedoed by Japanese submarine RO-61. The resulting explosion killed five of her men and wounded 20, but prompt and clearheaded action brought flooding to a halt and got the ship underway so that she could be beached and later salvaged. Casco was floated on 12 September, and after emergency repairs at Dutch Harbor and Kodiak, she received a thorough overhaul at Puget Sound Navy Yard."

My mistake!

I misread Jack's post as the "Canso" had recently been returned to duty etc, the image of a PBY being torpedoed, let alone surviving to return to duty should have caused me to re-read his photo caption - lol

You're not alone, Mark. I did exactly the same as you did. One of the problems with being a quick reader.....

Thanks for that shot, Jack. There is something about the Catalina that just catches my eye.
