RCAF aircraft marking stencils

Dear WIX Brain,

I'm in the process of re-Canadianizing my T-33's markings. It's still in the original NATO camo paint scheme and has all the original placards, just needs the roundels, serial number on nose and tail, Canadian Forces markings on the fuselage and intakes and the flag on the tail (did I miss anything?). This will restore it as it appeared during it's last operational assignment with 434 Squadron at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia that ended in March of 2002. Anyone have a reference for current Canadian Air Force aircraft markings, specifically dimensions so I can make up stencils? Better yet, the actual stencils would be perfect. I've scoured my CFTOs and didn't find any diagrams with measurements, just generic guidance on placement of markings. I've queried my CF maintenance contacts at ATESS/CFB Trenton to see if they can help and haven't heard back. Thanks!

I think you need a copy of DND’s Federal Identity Program it should have the marking specs for the CT-133. In my past life in the Gov, we used this manual for everything from marking signs,letterhead and buildings to painting our ships and helo’s.

Since the T-33’s have been retired, you may want to try the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa, I believe they are now the custodians of a lot of this type of documentation. I have a contact at the museum that may be able to help, PM me if you’d like his name and email.

if none of the "official" sources pan out, you could always try the modeling community; a maker of decals for the CT-133 might be willing to release the vector files to you for cutting into stencils.

Thanks for the PM. Yessir that's it! Cool pic! She's still in that NATO camoflauge paint scheme. The first thing I noticed was how fresh and clean the paint finish looked. I'll have to freshen it up a bit. Sporting the new F-5 style windscreen, this means that pic was taken after her depot-level overhaul and avionics upgrade in April 1997 and during or shortly after her assignment to Baden-Solingen (sp?) Germany which is why she wore the NATO camoflauge scheme. I've never seen that photo and it really shows the markings well. Thanks!

Well, the makeover of former RCAF/Canadian Forces T-33 133579 to Canadian Federal Identification Program markings is complete. Here are a few photos. My thanks to fellow WIXer Henning for his great help on this project and for being at least as anal as I am in his attention to detail. I flight tested it yesterday. The fuelers even wondered if it was the same airplane. Wish someone could have gotten a photo of the approach end of the runway as I was touching down as my buddy was holding short in his RCAF-marked Harvard. If we get a break from the snow, I'll see if I can coax Henning to come over and get some better shots outside.

I'm looking forward to seeing lots of smiles on the faces of my Canadian friends when they see the new-old markings on my airplane. One of the jet warbird flightline volunteers at Oshkosh every year is a former RCAF WSO/EWO who has a lot of flight time in T-Birds so it'll be fun to see his reaction. I appreciate the nice thoughts and am pleased it will be a welcome sight to my Canuck friends. My buds that are the new T-Bird owners I wrote about in Warbird Digest are planning to leave their T-33s 133599 and 133610 in the original solid grey paint and reapply the Canadian FIP markings same as I did. We hope to have a three-ship arrival at Oshkosh with these three jets and perhaps a fourth. Should be a nifty little Canadian invasion from the air!

Thanks Peter! Besides the historical accuracy and tribute to the Canadian Air Force legacy, I really like the way it looks!

That will be awesome if they reapply the markings or better yet, carefully sand through and then reapply the markings for originality? Dunno if that is possible. I tip my hat tyou and your friends for saving these aircraft from the scrappie.
