Thanks Paul,
Another similar configured aircraft of the same era was the Martin P4M Mercator that also used the mixed propulsion. Being a larger aircraft, the P4M used Wasp Majors with the J33.
The P4M-1Q equipped the Navy's first electronic countermeasures sqn., VQ-1.

Did the B-36 carry two types of fuel? I would think they would just run Av gas in both types. I asked C-123 veterans and they said they ran av gas in the jets. Probably not the best for them, but then again they didn't have to buy new engines themselves. Heck we run Jet A in our construction equipment at our airport so why not av gas in the jets?

The B-36 also used avgas only. The jets run well on avgas. One problem concerns lead buildup on hot section parts. There is a danger of lead poisoning if you touch the turbine wheels or EGT probes if you have a break in your skin, such as a safety wire cut. When I briefly worked in an aircraft engine shop in the 1st Cav in Phu Bai in 1968,we had a T-53 in for a hot end inspection after running on mogas (leaded auto gas). One guy in the shop ended up with severe lead poisoning after working on the hot end.I heard conflicting reports as to whether he recovered or died.We certainly never saw him again. When Aero Union first added J-34's to their C-119 air tankers in the early 70's,there was talk about running the jet on kerosene, but the chances for misfuelling were too great and the piston engines would be destroyed in minutes,if not seconds with even a few percent contamination of avgas with jet fuel.

I met a former Navy pilot yesterday that flew the Savage. We got to talking about planes, and I asked him if he flew....he said "yeah, but I'll bet you've never heard of the AJ-1"

lol, I had just read this topic the night before. Small world.
