Oh, I thought you meant this P-51 killer...Willi Steinmann...12 confirmed Mustang kills. He only managed to shoot down 7 Jugs though. Hmmmm...

Coincidentally, Steinmann also took out a pair of B-24's during Tidal Wave.

Yeah that brings up the question, who has the most Mustang kills ? the guy above?

Steinmann was credited with most 51 scores at 12, Bartel with 11, Bar, Schall and Hoffman with 10 each. In all 22 LW aces were credited with 5 or more.

I may have a problem with Bartels claims for 3 on 24 April 1944 however. That day the LW awarded 12 Mustangs to Me 109 pilots around Munich on a day in which a total of four was lost (355Fg and 357Fg) to Me 109s. JG27 including Bartels and Stiegler were awarded 5 all by them selves, so the award process may have been shakier than we know.

Steinmann was awarded 7 Jugs. Tops on 47s were Hoffman and Wesiengerger at 13, Mayer and Meimberg with 12, Bar and Eder at 10 each. In all LW aces credited 30 pilots with 5 or more.

9 of those 52 above were credited with at least five on both.

On the other hand, just for 8th AF...

Top 109 killers were Preddy (21), Meyer (14.5), Thornell (13.5) and seven more with 10 or more. Most of the pilots with more than 7 were Mustang drivers. My father had six Me 109s.

The top 190 killers were Johnson (15.5), Zemke (15), Schilling (12), Carson (11), Gabreski and Whisner (10). Most with more than 7 were Mustang drivers but top four of six were P-47 pilots.

In all eight P-47 pilots got at least 5 of each. Zemke, Williamson, Quince Brown, Christenson, Duncan, Gabreski, R.Johnson, G.Johnson,

16 Mustang pilots got five of each.

118 8th AF pilots shot down at least 5 of either a 109 or Fw 190, 24 shot down at least 5 of each type. There were quite a few more that were 'fighter/fighter' aces (i.e 3 Fw 190, 1 Me 262, 1 Me 109) but I just listed the single fighter type kills above.

???

so, you're not really talking the top but just within the 8th AF :?:

Absolutely Jack - no 354FG, no 325FG, no 9th, 12th, 15th, RAF, etc, etc - just the lowly 8th. WOULD be suprised if someone tops Preddy on 109s, however.

Bill

PS the above stuff is WIP and cross referencing USAF 85, Olynyk, Kent Miller and my own stuff. It is definitely 'reasonably' accurate but Olynyk will be the final decision for ties or conflicts.
