I can't see any specific evidence from the scan, but I wouldn't be surprised if the serial was doctored out (you know "secrecy" and all that jazz... :) )

Serial numbers were not applied until sometime in early 1942 in many instances. One of the more popular photos of a B-17E during the Pearl Harbor attack shows a bare tail with no serial.

I'm not sure, but I think I have the serial of this particular airplane somewhere at home. When we get power back I'll fire up the computer and see.
