Well, I thought I knew, then I thought it was something else, and it isn't, so I'm stumped. What is it?

Image

Given as 'Sikorsky flying boat, Pearl Harbor, 1933' in Paddy Heffernan's photo album, now in the RAAF Museum archive. Date and location will be correct, but I don't think that's a Sikorsky. The cockpit canopy looks like one of the Hall PB- boats, but the hull's not right even thought the configuration is. Looks like a compact PBY-1, but isn't.

Warm feeling and my thanks to the person to identify it with proof. (Git yr own ponies.)

I'm trying to find the original.

Tom, It's very Hall, in look, layout etc, but it don't quite match any Hall pics I've found.

Looks like they are from the same family.

Go there http://www.hq.nasa.gov/pao/History/SP-468/ch8-4.htm and scroll down to the first picture.

Yes, it looks like a Hall PN-11/P4N, but it's not. The rudder is completely different and the engines are smaller as well (the housing at least). The beaching gear looks a bit different as well...

The Hall PN-11

It's a Martin PM-1 with a speedring cowling and a canopy enclosure, see:

Baugher has a listing of the fate of this one:
Quote:
A8289/8313 Martin PM-1
Production version of Naval Aircraft Factory PN-12.
8294 collided with OJ2 A9191 and crashed near Boeing MAP
Seattle, WA Nov 3, 1937.

Referenced at: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/firstseries2.html

It IS interesting that it's a production of the NAF PN-12 - a derivative of a Hall product, hence the similarities.

It's a Martin PM-1 Serial # 8294.
Crashed after a mid air collision near Seattle on Nov. 3, 1937.

Mind if I post that photo over on the SEAWINGS forum ?
(With credits of course)

Thanks everyone.

Martin 'boats begat Hall 'boats, hence the red herring. which accounts for the confusion. It's rare I can't get a boat relatively quickly, by that was a doosy. Thanks again.

Mr Widgeon - be delighted. Credit is RAAF Museum Archive, Paddy Heffernan albums. Mentioning me would be nice too. :D
