Anyone know this unit?

Tue Nov 27, 2007 7:48 am

G'day all.

I am looking for information on a USAAF unit known as 301ADS 8SrG. I presume that 301ADS is 301st Airfield Defence Squadron? I know they were operating in PNG in February 1945 and can identify two particular aircraft they used; P47D 42-23168 and P-38J 42-68009.

Any advice on hunting down this unit would be greatly appreciated.

On just a brief look, probably ran across the same info that you already have, but here's what I came across:

P-47 42-23168 was a P-47D-RA-15, and P-38 42-68009 was a P-38J-10-LO.

Neither serial was listed in Joe Baugher's site at:

http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/usafserials.html

Might give these folks a try.

Reference to other P-47s in the 43- serial range belonging to this unit is
also made at:

Lots of wrecks at Lae and Nadzab #1

Late addition - From Pacific Wrecks website, this unit appears to be the 8th Service Group, 301st Aerodrome Squadron. Included in this Group was a Combat Replacement Training Center at Nadzab #1.

Old SAR,

Thanks for your reply. Is is a bit mysterious that there is no reference to this unit to be found, and even more mysterious that those serials are missing from the Baugher site.

I am chasing a few other leads at the moment, but certainly am looking for all the help I can get.

Cheers

Walrus
