While cleaning out the garage today I found these "relics". They are full size Mustang and P-40 panel replicas..."rivet for rivet" er nail...they look cool hanging on a wall...just need a wall.

"Shangri-La" would make a nice keepsake for Randy H, given his former nose art!

OK...I gotta ask...from the thread title JimH, are these things that you can buy as a kit or something from Home Depot or did you make them? I for one would love to go and pick these up as a kit if they are for sale!

Waaayyy back in the late 90's when I was doing artwork full time I had a customer approach me about doing full size Mustang panels. I priced out doing the panels with actual materials which turned out to be cost prohibitive. Plan B...when I was in college I worked summers as a carpenter and brainstormed that Home Depot had all the materials I needed. Aluminum flashing, 1x's (stringers), 1x4's (formers), flat head nails (rivets), and large sheet metal screw to simulate dzus fasters and viola. Using a NA drawing of a P-51B enlarged to full scale I made a pattern for the cowling sections. These turned out pretty well so I did the same thing for the P-40. The P-40 was a bit easier as MAPS had a P-40 fuselage on display so used it as a reference to build those panels. I also made patterns to build full size B-17 panels but never got around to doing them...some day...I definetly see a 909 in my future! Thanks for the interest
