2007 Cowtown Warbird Roundup photos

Hey, y'all. . .

I thought someone might be interested in seeing pics of the aircraft that were on display at the 2007 Cowtown Warbird Roundup in Fort Worth this weekend. Great variety of aircraft. WX was gorgeous both days. Lotta work, but a really fun weekend! Here's the link to my Photobucket account, for your viewing pleasure (too many pics to post here!). Event was held at Fort Worth Meacham Airport, KFTW.

Thanks Dean! Excuse my ignorance as I haven't been to Meacham in years, but is there some kind of jet museum there now. It looks like there were several "recent" jets there that look like they haven't flown in a while. I'm specifically referring to the A-4, F-5's and F-4's. Were any of those of civilian registration?

Cool shots! Was it an airshow, just just a static fly-in?

Yes, there is a growing static collection of "recent" aircraft on display. The OV-10 Bronco Association and the Forward Air Controllers Museum are putting together the Fort Worth Veterans Memorial Airpark in the grassy area just on the south side of the main hangar. Currently on display are: OV-10A Bronco (two of them), O-2 Skymaster, A-4C Skyhawk, F-5E Tiger II (USN Agressor), QF-4S Phantom II (Viet Nam combat veteran which flew off the USS America), and the very last F-14A Tomcat that was still in USN service when the fleet retired (also the oldest one that was still in service). The Airpark is still in its infancy. They plan to really do it up nice, with concrete walkways, professional signage, etc.

The Warbird Roundup is a static display event, although it's great to be there on Friday when all of the modern military aircraft arrive (you know military pilots; they just *have* to show off "a little" on their way in!). On Saturday morning before the gates open to the public is when all of the vintage aircraft arrive, and that's a real treat, too!

Rumour has it that the next event may be held in the spring of '08 instead of on October because October is such a busy month for the three groups who run the event. That is only "being talked about", not definite.

There was a typo in the photo name. It's a U-17 (the L-17 was a Navion). Sorry for all the boo-boos... I was tired!

Uh, KD5H, the PT-22 looks an awful lot like Bob Dunn and his PT-19.

Yep, you're absolutely right. Error has been corrected. I don't know what made me type PT-22 there. I spent about 1/2 hour chatting with Bob when he arrived, and I helped park his airplane!

Since I've thoroughly embarassed myself with errors and stupid mistakes, I should probably just have the moderators delete this entire thread. :cry:

Looks like you had a great weekend! This little "show" is getting better every year. Great!

So did they paint both side of F-4 Scooby?

She looks good in that paint but I would hate to loose her last operational look.

It was a real fun weekend. As I said, the WX was superb, and it was a lot of work, but I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

As for "Scooby", yes, they repainted both sides, but only the right side was done up in the "vintage" scheme. The left side is still the QF-4 paint job, but repainted so that it looks really nice.

Nice Phantom! Here's a question: So have all the QF-4S's been 'expended'? If not I'm thinking any chance the Navy would use some for a bit for Legacy Flights like the USAF does with their QF-4E's?

Scooby was the last Navy QF-4. Some folks who needed a Phantom to do some govt. testing BEGGED the Navy to keep one for their needs. Scooby was the one, this guy told me it was fully setup with test equipment and was beautiful. The Navy said no way and promptly gutted her and gave it to the OV-10 group as a static.
