That footage reminds me a little of a pancake-and-sausage fly-in that is held in our general vicinity each month. Lots of airplanes, no radio in some, and not everyone paying attention. It's kind of hard to miss a Gooney in the pattern though!!!

Here's a reply from a friend of mine. It looked like one of the airports that they go to fly-ins at around Indiana. He was there and here's what he had to say....


"You bet it was. That was the Lee Bottom Fly in last year. I was there when the DC-3 guy took off and did about 6 passes, then landed. On two of the passes, he drug the mains through the corn at the north end of the field and when he landed, he had corn shocks stuck in the gear.

I don’t know what the Piper pilot was thinking. We had the same comments at the time. Actually, it wasn’t as bad as it looked as the DC-3 was west of the strip and was long gone by the time the Piper lifted off.

On one of the very cool passes, the DC-3 was about 200 feet west of the strip and did a banking photo pass along the hill in the picture. The crowd got the noise from the aircraft and the echo off the hillside. It was very cool."

I actually saw a similar incident once at AZO involving a B-25 and a Cessna 152. The Mitchell took off, and came back around for a flyby along the taxiway, just as the 152 was climbing out. Admitedly, the B-25 wasn't as low as the gooney in the clip, but I'm sure the guys in the 152 needed to have the seat cushions cleaned when they landed...

Holy Cow. That would have made me clinch a little seeing that happen in front of me, and even more clinching if I was in either airplane.

Also, it looks like the DC-3 got QUITE low after it passed the Piper. That's pretty daring with a big bird like that.

Well I'm not so sure about that. It appears that the -18 was inside of the DC-3, and the -3 definitely overtook them. I think camera angle made it look a lot worse - but still. I know for a fact that it can be pretty hard to see an aircraft on final if he's low. Worse at some airports due to terrain and obstructions. The guys that like to drag it in are the worst to spot, so maybe the Super Cub pilot never saw them, or else he knew it wasn't a factor because they were going outside of him. What struck me was the push the -3 made. Not very smooth and already low. Scary looking video though.

That's flying into an uncontrolled field for you. Many times landing at 30F here in the DFW area, you will call on final and then see another a/c coming at you the other way not talking. Happens all the time. Good ole situation awareness. I always teach students to look and clear for final and then check the wrong way as well.
