Mustangs that were not at GML

I was watching for arrivals on Flightaware.com and Joe T's corporate jet was scheduled for arrival at Rickenbacker, so I assumed the Mustang was in tow.

No-shows off the top of my head:

Upupa Epops, Planes of Fame A and D, Man O' War, Comfortably Numb, Val-Halla, Strega, Six Shooter, This Is It, Miss America, Evergreen, Jim Smith's, Red Nose, Cavanaugh, Sugar Booger, Straw Boss, Grim Reaper, Bald Eagle, Both H's, Stang Evil, Bill Hanes' D and TF, Merlin's Magic, Ted Contri's 2, Lady Alice, Aadu Karemaa's, Kiss Me Kate, Sierra Sue, Daddy's Girl, Angels Playmate?, Tempus Fugit, Bill Dause's, American Beauty, Stephanie the TF, Michael Potter's, Cottonmouth, Alabama Rammer Jammer, Jack Hovey's, My Sweet Mary Lou?, Bob Pond's, the Santa Fe Mustang, Berni Jackson's, Su Su, Mike Coutches' D, The Healer, Kimberly Kaye, Short Fuse Salle?, and Crusader? ...I think thats it.

Anyone else have any? BTW, the ones with question marks are ones that might have made it to the Gathering, but I haven't seen a photo of them to be sure.

The EAA has two mustnags that have beenforever grounded from participating at sport aviation events, the XP-51 and their Cavalier P-51D. Both could have been made airworthy fairly easily.

I'm not sure about the accuracy of that statement. The XP has been a static exhibit for 25 years. I think most wrenches would concur that she'd require a ground-up before taking to the wild blue again...especially being such a rare airframe. Wouldn't you agree?

Didn't know Joe had gotten a corporate jet. Last time I talked to him all he had was the Pitts, Sea Hawk, and Crusader.

I mis-spoke. I went back and checked Flightaware, and it was a Cessna 425 registered to Joe. Clearly not a jet. Turboprop though. N425JT is the registration. I noticed several owners were filing under a lead ship, while the Mustang tagged along. I assumed that Crusader was tagging along just the same.

Does anyone know who the Citation Jet "Mustang" belonged to and why it was flying, leading the formation on Saturday? It appeared to have a military paint job. It was too far away to get a good look at.

I know the 130 was the photo/formation ship, was the jet a photo ship also?

Ahh, okay. I thought that was his son's plane. Guess not.

Guess he made it because the 425 did, but it'd be nice to find a picture because I've not found one yet.

Which C-130 were they using? Snow's C-130M or the Cherry/Snow C-130A?

I had the chance to give Jim a ride from the 'hot zone' back down the line towards op... and said it was a good thing he had three - so one could make it. He said he'd thought that three meant he had a better than likely chance of having one broken at any given time. My reply was that three gives him a better-than-likely chance that he will have at least one that is flyable at any given time....

Are they planning another Mustang gathering next year and do you think they could get em all in the air at once .....that would be a thing to see/hear

I believe the announcer said that this plane was flying with the group as the safety plane. Probably just keeping an eye on everyone making sure all of the planes were in visual contact and that type of thing.

I really doubt there would be a Mustang gathering next year. I believe this event took at least two years to plan and pull together.

#1 - Putting all the Mustangs in the air at once?
In addition to the coordination required to launch them all, and not speaking as a pilot of anything (let alone a P51 Mustang), something in me doubts that a lot of pilots would want to get into the air with that many pilots they have not flown with before.
Also, I have no idea just how many of those pilots are formation rated.
Again, this is just a thought or two from a non-P51-pilot with absolutely no inside information.
#2 - As for doing something like this again..IMHO, it seems such a huge undertaking (and it WAS called "The Final Round-Up")...I doubt that we will see something like this large a gathering again anytime soon.
Will there be other "Mustang Shows"? Probably sometime. Will they be this large? I wonder...and we can all hope...

I think the main reason behind the title "The Final Round-Up" is because of the veterans, not the airplanes. I'm sure that the number of veterans available to attend the '99 Gathering was probably double or even triple what they were for this year. It's too sad to be honest. So many guys with pictures and stories untold.

People keep asking about the "Citation" with the "military" paint job that flew with the Mustangs. If you're talking about the smoke grey bird with the faux military tail code and the "N" number on the engines, it wasn't a Citation. It was a Jayhawk
