Thanks to everyone for advice and especially Jotomp for the Irfanview tip, that made it possible to change these photographs in bulk from tiffs to jpegs and Photobuckets "Generated HTML, Ebay and IMG Code" which made it easy to post lots of pics with a minimal amount of work on my part.....

The women from the 99's sent me this note..........

The synergy in The 99s never ceases to amaze me. I sent your photo to 3 of our 5500+ members and got this in return:

Hello all, I have an 8x10 print of the photo. The names are scribbled on the back, approximately behind each woman, so a little difficult to be sure. The photo is not dated. A note at the bottom “Annette Gipson Race, all women – usually held Memorial day”

Left to right standing: 1. Arlene Davis, 2. no name, 3. Evelyn Sevorskey (? spelling), 4. Marjorie Ludwigson, National Secretary, N Y Section Governor, 5. no name, 6. no name, 7. Mrs. I J Fox, Ferriers Sponsor, 8. Annette Gipson, 9. Suzanne Humphreys.

Left to right Seated: 1. Edith Descomb, 2. Frances Marsalis, 3. Helen Richey, 4. Amelia Earhart, 5. Amy Mollison, 6. Ruth Nichols. Frances Marsalis worked for WACO Sales at Roosevelt Field in New York. She was killed in an airplane crash in 1934.

And this.........Arlene's husband wanted to learn to fly so went out to the airport and started lessons, each day coming home to tell Arlene of all his exciting adventures. Arlene thought that sounded like fun so started lessons herself, however, in secret so she wouldn't be embarrassed if she couldn't do it. It went well for her and she soloed and was moving right along in her training - still on the QT. One day her husband came home and told her that he would solo the next day and she should come out to the airport and watch it. So she did. He soloed and there was much excitement and congratulations - of course her husband still didn't know that Arlene was already flying. During the back slapping and celebration Arlene commented that that didn't look so hard, walked over to the airplane, got in it, taxied out and took off.

The 99s

Nice stuff... I really dig that mural behind the bar!

I'm not an airship kinda guy, but those photos of R34 are rather interesting as well.

The seventh photo shows Captain Aurthur H. Page (I think) and the Curtiss XF6C-6.

Here's a more complete look at this bird...

I'm reasonably certain that the people in the middle of this photo are Martin and Osa Johnson, the explorers who operated a Sikorsky S-38 and S-39. Matching photos of Martin in Osa's book 'I Married Adventure' to this one looks pretty certain, however there's a couple of oddities. As far as I know, Martin and Osa didn't have children. Secondly their Sikorskys were painted in Giraffe blotches (single engine S-39) and zebra stripes (twin engine S-38 ). It could be a shot at rollout before painting, or a publicity shot with another S-38...

Interesting, certainly Amelia, but the woman to her left, with her left hand up and wearing a broach at her throat is also certainly Amy Johnson, Britain's most famous inter-war aviatrix. That makes it an international meet, or at least one overseas guest.

14 is titled All Womens Air Race 1934

The pilot of the biplane with the bathing beauty adorning the step is apparently Andy Stinis, founder and lead pilot for the original SkyTypers, with their rare SNJ-2s.

And please let me say a rousing 'thank you' once again. This stuff is incredible!

I saw that, which is also interesting as Amy wasn't really a racing pilot, primarily going for distance records.

It would be great to track down all these people!

I remember going to Roosevelt Field as a boy with my parents when we used to live in Seaford. That was in the early 1970s, and by then, the airfield had already been turned into a mall. I liked it because they had cars inside the mall.

I'd love to see that bar re-created! Wish there was a color photo someplace...

What's the story behind the "Black Harlem Air Squadron"?

Quick update/correction

Hi, all--

I've been "away" for a while, dealing with some video problems.

Please note that on Page 17, the foto immediately below the one of the USS Wasp shows two aicraft described as "S2T" (no such bird, as far as I know).
In reality, the a/c shown are WF-2 ("Willie Fudds"), with the far a/c being a systems-test bird bailed from the Navy.

After McNamara's "universal designation" fiasco, WF-2s were re-designated E-1A.
