Navy B-24 (PB4Y-1) with rearview mirrors.

Here's a PB4Y-1 Liberator sporting mirrors. Any guesses why and have you ever seen another B-24 like this?

Maybe I'm wrong but they look like they are ment to see nose of the aircraft. It looks like the front mirror reflects what the side mirror is seeing up front. :?

Mirrors?

I am not sure but have sent the picture to a friends father who has countless hours in the PB4Y during WWII and when I here back will post his response.

Maybe someone stole his "curb feelers" and he need them so he wouldn't run into the curb while parking.

Looks to me like the Co-Pilot mirror is aimed at the Drivers mirror that is aimed forward and also, it seems that they have some sort of lines attached to them also.

Maybe some form of aiming device, like the Lanks and the lights, maybe.

We use a similar set up on the US Postal Service delivery trucks, also known as an LLV(Long Life Vehicle....go figure). Someone probably saw that picture and said "HMMMMM!"
Image
As you can see, no aft visibility at all(Check 6??), piloted from the co-pilots position(Brit??) and worst of all, You Can't See the Front Bumper!!!!!! When we first aquired the LLVs they came with a single pair of mirrors as on any vehicle, only on ours the top half was flat and the bottom was convex. Then some one "Discovered" all these aformentioned Blind Spots. The improved set up was; two mirrors in the standard each side positions(1 convex, 1 flat per side); Two convex mirrors on the left grill( one to view front bumper, one to watch centerline go by LLV); one convex on the left rear roof(To watch where rear bumper has been  ), to be watched through either the left-side flat( or for a different prospective-either of the left-side convex). Seven mirrors for your viewing pleasure.......................................................................................

I usually kept at least one pointing at Myself, just to make sure I was in the LLV when it was moving! I didn't what any Letter of Warning for not being in my truck when it was running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :?

Re: Problem with posting

ACarey wrote:Since there was a problem of me posting the image in an innocent attempt to gain information, I have deleted the image. It was a low resolution image with imbedded information but that wasn't good enough.
Therefore, due to this episode and others, I have made a decision based on the following:

Maybe I'm stupid but I have never, over the years, asked for payment from individuals, museums, or corporations (i.e. helped with technical information for a flight simulator without pay or acknowledgemt).

I have attempted to right forgotten aspects of Navy and USMC aviation. I was the first to write a book dedicated to VB/VPB-109 and subsequent works consisting of USN VB/VPB, VP, and PBJ operations. I have not had the success of individuals such as James Bradley and my books have earned very little.

I have provided technical, historical, and photographic information, and have helped veterans with obtaining military awards that were not awarded during WWII (DFC, Air Medal, Purple Heart, POW Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon). Additionally, I have helped families by providing information about there relatives who served.

I did this in memory of my father who served with VB-109. I now feel that my relationship with 109 has been tarnished. Therefore, because of this issue et al, I will no longer post additional images or videos on any website, mine or others. Any future requests for information/videos/images will be studied on a case-by-case basis and I may request payment. I will also rework my websites to include copyright information.

I sincerly apologize to those who have helped me over the years who have not questioned my work and those individuals may contact me concerning this announcement.

I do not know what the problem is here, but I can say this: I have had personal contact with Mr. Carey numerous times over the past few years in my research on my father and VMB-611. He has always been very helpful and has provided me with many items, including a photo of my father that I did not have and the Aircraft Action Report on the May 30, 1945 mission that Lt. Col. Sarles was KIA and my father went MIA.

I strongly believe Mr. Carey is a person of great integrity whose goal is to honor his father and his service to our country, just as mine is to honor my father and VMB-611. I do not know the reason for his posting, but I think it may be an injustice to his character and unfounded. If my opinion causes a problem with anyone, live with it!
