The Imprial War Museum North (UK)

Hi all. I went to the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester over the weekend. It is an unusual museum, concentrating on the human experiences of war. It has lots of personal things such as last letters home, POW’s diaries and such like. Some of the exhibits are very moving.
The biggest exhibit is this USMC AV8-A (159233) quite why it ended up back in the U.K. I don’t know. We have a few of our own! The museum is very, very dark, so photography was quite difficult. One of the other exhibits was a Fraser Nash turret. It had a black exterior, black interior and was in a dark corner. I might as well have left the lens cap on!
I quite like the museum but quite a few over hear don't.

Personally, I think this is the most important aspect. Combat is sometimes looked upon by warbird people as a clash of machines, I think because it's the machines that so many are interested in. The fact of the matter is quite different.
I'll have to go check that museum out sometime...when I'm back in the UK for a substantial period of time!

You should also check out the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. They have an Avro Shackelton, a Spitfire, the prototype English Electric Lightning, and an Okha flying bomb, among others.
I was a little perplexed by the USMC Harrier at the Imperial War Museum too. Couldn't they have repainted it at least?

If you ever go to the I W M in Lambeth (S. London) they have a real V-2 rocket on the 1st floor. Good thing Hitler did not have more of these eary! Also a good bookstore there.
