i watch the world news nightly, naturally iraq is always at the glum front of the broadcast. question...... what is the contraption mounted on the infantry helmets at forehead level??? a video camera?? a light?? both?? i see all the ground pounders in iraq with them. is this something used in urban warfare?? is it used in jungle warfare in regions with thick foliage growth too??

Since it's mounted to the helmet it looks a lot more comfortable than the early PVS-7 night vision goggles we used to use in the Army back in the 90's. They came with a headstrap harness which felt as though you were wearing some weird kind of sadistic S&M mask! Only thing missing was the chains and the ball gag!

There are lots of different types

AN/PVS-5

AN/PVS-7 series

AN/PVS-14

The list goes on as to all the different types used.

But the basic point to our enemies is:

"You can't hide........Death waits for you in the dark"

Our pilots in the FA-18C had some really nice HUD type NVG, the idea was that is they died (the goggles, not the pilot) or encountered a bright light the pilot could still see without having to try and pull the goggles off. They weighted about 1 lb. and cost crazy bucks from what I was told. They could also still see everything in the cockpit. The only problem was the projected vision was just a bit off form what you could see because the tubes were above your eyes, but it wasn’t bad enough to cause problems, I think I only was able to play with them a few times.

I can't find pictures of them on the net (yet) and my pictures I took seemed to have disappeared in the mail.
