Boeing 3M Tape

Mon Jul 09, 2007 11:07 pm

I have 3 rolls of a special heat resistant 3M Tape. It is packaged with a BOEING sticker on the reverse side. I'm guessing it is used for something important. Anyone know of anyone that can use it, or knows what it is for. My father said it had to do with aircraft engines. I have pics that I can send out. Its been puzzling me for awhile what it is for. They came out of a lot of stuff I got from an military depot in California. Thanks.

Does it have a part number or a MIL-SPEC number written on it anywhere? What color is it? Is it adhesive backed tape? How wide is it?

Is it green? 1" wide?

The two rolls that seem to be 1/2 inch have a tag with them that reads :

The boeing company
Perishable void date : 15AUG08
Temp: 40-90 DEG
PO: 3E08576
BATCH : 3140
MTR : 030619
P/N : DPM3001/.5

The second reads the same but with exp. date : 10OCT08
And it seems to be an inch wide. Also under the sticker on the 3M Box it reads Extended Film Tape. As for the green tape. The one they call "600 mph tape". I have had that before, but this seemed aviation related.

Thanks,

Rich

bdk - Thank you for the links. I think I have a better understanding of it now, or I would like to think so. They might have come out of Travis AFB, but who knows. The GSA gets there stuff from all over the place.

Very confused by your comment. I looked up E.B. GREEN on the internet and found absolutely nothing. I'm not familiar with the term. Thank you in advance.

Hey Rich, just something that popped into my head -- grew up here near Electric Boat, and lots of people in the area are (OK, were) employed there.........They all seemed to have this multi-purpose, heavy duty OD green tape that could be used to fix danged near anything -- was called "EB Green" by those who had pilfered their rolls of it from "The Boat" -- When I saw question about the "mystery tape" I couldn't resist! Sorry for the confusion!

This tape has been used by Douglas Aircraft since at least the early 1970s to wrap electrical bundles in areas subject to contact with hydraulic fluid.

Sounds kind of like GM – Generous Motors.

No worries. Ive heard alot about that tape. I received about 15 rolls of the od green tape that you are talking about and alot of people had some funny stories behind it. One man out here in Concord, CA said that when in the military he attached it to some sought of bomb and when the bomb didn't detonate it was still attached when found a month later. We all know that the truth behind alot of those stories is probably false, but I got a kick out of it. Another guy said he made green shoes and wore them around and no one knew the difference. Its good to know the tape went to good use.

It is actually made by blind people in Cincinnati. Its a government organization that gives jobs to the blind. They make alot of useful items for the military.

Thanks. Good to know, but I still don't have the faintest idea what I am going to use it for.
