The Black Rifle

A couple of you guys posted photos of your AR-15 variants in the "My Gameroom" thread. How many WIXers shoot the AR-15? I have been shooting an Armalite M-15A4 flattop with the detachable handle and front sight, but have started shooting in matches. I am thinking of purchasing a White Oak upper and a Rock River 2-stage trigger. Any tips or suggestions?

Pat,

I have been shooting a Colt HBar Sporter since 1993. A couple of years ago I started dabbeling in NRA Highpower...I'm hooked!

I bought a Rock River National Match last year..nice two stage trigger and heavy free floated barrel match sights...everything NRA and CMP Service Rifle legal. It shoote better than I do. It'll hit a pie plate at 600 yards with the right ammo.

I have heard nothing but good things about the White Oak uppers. A lot of the serious shooters use them.

I also shoot a little Garand and Springfield match stuff too.

Woot! Super fun.

I have shot the AR-15 for about a year now. The one in my gameroom is a real M-16, but was demilled and given to me.

Zane, you are right. I've shot in three high power matches, and it is a lot of fun. I'm still learning the protocol, but I belong to a great club with a bunch of experienced guys willing to help. The first match, I jammed up with a dirty chamber. The second, I fired 22 rounds in the offhand, and only got off 5 out of 8 in the sitting rapid fire. I now need to spend some dough on a spotting scope, stand, and rifle upgrades. I also just started reloading for .223 with the Lee kit, but haven't tried out my first batch yet. The next match is Saturday morning, and I am going to a SAFS clinic on the 28th and 29.

I've been shooting my Colt SP-1 sporadically since I bought it it in 1978. The only upgrades it has received are: smoothed trigger and sear faces and pivot areas and a polish job on the firing pin. The only problem that I have never been able to resolve is a persistant recoil buffer spring squeek. It's noticiable even under rapid fire conditions.

I have one for sale if anyone is interested. It has a Bushmaster receiver (XM-15E2S I think) and was built up from parts. It is an 11.5 inch barreled HBAR (heavy barreled) Carbine (collapsible stock). Asking $750 and has to be shipped to an FFL.

It is in very good condition and doesn't look like it has been fired much.

Two things...try removing the spring and coating it with a good bit of grease...like wheel bearing grease.

Or get a Tubb spring...

I greased my Colt spring and it still makes a little noise...but a lubed Tubb spring makes virtually no noise.

Have a Colt HBar Match that's been in the closet for a while now. Used to use it for prarie dogs and Redneck Golf (golf balls at 250-300 yds). Works like a champ. Getting ready to try it at 600meters this weekend at a computerized range.

Speaking of which, if any of y'all are out in West Texas, try the range at Robert Lee. Website is:

I have a Olympic Arms, PCR AR-15, the PCR stand for Politicaly Correct Rifle. Got to love a company with a sence of humor.
