Instruments in a Harvard IIB

Sat Jul 26, 2014 5:40 am

Hi All,
Trying to collect the necessary instruments for my restoration but am finding info hard to come by. I've read that the Noorduyn built IIB's had american instruments fitted as they were ordered by the USAF specifically for Lend lease. However, I have a copy of the RAF's pilots notes (A.P. 1691) which show RAF instruments!? Anybody know what was the in service fit? Part numbers would be great! I know, I'm asking the earth! Failing that, does anybody know / have the RAF publication which lists the part numbers. My parts catalogue just states a generic "Air Speed Indicator" etc.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I replied on your Facebook post, but I figured it might be beneficial to others if I re-post it here. :-)

They should be similar, but the Harvard IIA was an NAA-built AT-6C and the Harvard IIB was Noorduyn-built.
Here's what is in the postwar RCAF Harvard Parts Catalog...should be pretty close to the wartime fittings.

- Engine Gauge (tri-gauge) - Manning, Maxwell & Moore (MM&M) 6542-12 or US Gauge 2007
- Manifold Pressure - Kollsman 162-01, Pioneer 1911-1B or MM&M 6744
- Tachometer - Kollsman 257B01
- Rate of Climb Indicator - Pioneer 1610-1B-C1, Kollsman 614K023 or Canadian Aircraft Instruments RC-1L
- Airspeed - RCAF 6AA/998
- Cylinder Head Temperature - Weston 602 or Lewis 17AT3D
- Carb Air Temp - Weston 606 (Type 84A) or Lewis 47AC-E
- Altimeter - Kollsman 528-01, 528-03, or 177B031
- Clock - Pioneer 3310-2
- Directional Gyro - Sperry 643715
- Suction - Pioneer 2601-1A, 2601-1A-B1, or US Gauge 2151
- Turn & Bank - Pioneer 1700-1A

Even with the part numbers, it's pretty tricky to find exact matches. For my Yale project, I've been doing generic searches for the gauge manufacturer and looking for ones that look the same (same faces) as from the photo of the instrument panel in the POI or Maintenance Manuals.
