Radial Engine Turbochargers KC-97(?) - FS

Fri May 22, 2009 4:53 pm

I've got several large radial engine turbos here that I'd like to send to new homes.

Data tag information reads: "General Electric Turbosupercharger Model 7S8 (or maybe 7S3?) - BH-4-DS. A.F. Spec MIL-T-7325 A.F. Setting 1 AF Contract or PO AF34-601-1801." There's a GE Serial Number on each data tag and and Assembly DRG. number, too.

I was told they were for the Boeing KC-97's and used in conjunction with the 4360 powerplants. That's the extent of my knowledge on said parts. I got 'em from an aero scrapyard down in Tucson, AZ about a decade ago. I just HAD to have them - and have consequently moved them around the shop and hangar more times than I'd like to count in the last 10 years.

These appear to be complete albeit dirty from outdoor storage and would need a full tear down and inspection. Wheels are not cracked as far as I can tell. Bearings are not frozen. Lots of heavy duty castings. They are heavy monsters - easily 150 pounds each, so truck freight from PHX AZ would be the only logical way to move 'em.

I was told that this was the largest exhaust driven turbocharger ever manufactured for a radial engine. I'd believe it. I've never seen anything quite so large and they probably cost the taxpayer a fortune when made new back in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

I know of a couple of canned used ones down at an aero salvage yard in southern Arizona. The owner there was $2K each for them. The ones I have don't come in any special mil cans and aren't as pretty, but I'll make you one heck of a deal. All appear to have been used, though one of them still retains a bright green Solar porcelain finish on the hot section.

Sell/trade/or donate for tax letter from 501(C)3. Neat pieces, but I don't want to move them around for another 10 years. Questions? Please ask and I will do what I can to answer in a timely fashion.

- Rob
