Joe,

I am not really familiar with Hissos but I know that there were several makers during WWI. It was considered a particularly good omen to get a Hispano built-Hispano engine in your SPAD built SPAD. They were called Hispano-Hispano/ SPAD-SPADs.

I do know a fellow who at least used to have a boat with a hisso engine in it. Roger Radbill. He might be able to tell you more about them. Good luck.

I have flown a Hisso powered Curtiss Jenny over fifty hours in the last five years or so, and we got 90 hours out of it before the first teardown.

As for the supply of them, they are around, but many are in groups with owners of a Hisso airplane or project. Therefore finding one that is for sale is rare. Frank (the Jenny owner) is always on the look out, but rarely finds anything but a few parts these days.
