since there are so many B-17's and the B-17 Registry is currenly undergoing overhaul, I figure that this a/c desrves its own section.

70th Anniversary of "Black Thursday"

Mon Oct 14, 2013 4:10 pm

Just couldn't let the day go by without remembering the Schweinfurt attack that occurred 70 years ago today, when about 300 B-17s - crewed by 10 men each - flew unescorted deep into Germany. Sixty were shot down and another five returned so badly damaged they were scrapped. Living memories of W.W. II are fading as the veterans slip away from us, but it is the duty of succeeding generations to honor those who sacrificed to defeat the Nazi tyranny.

For the undaunted airmen of the "Mighty 8th" that flew into the teeth of the most desperate air battles that will ever have been thought, in the words of Sir Winston Churchill, "Let Us Give Them Our Salute."

Wish I had known about this forum sooner so I too could have honored the memory of those who sacrificed so much on that day, my father included, who was with the 364th Sq 305th BG, he was ordered to bail whereas he was captured and sent to Stalag III.

Bless them all!

Thanks for noticing, and welcome to WIX! Do you have the serial number of the aircraft in which he was flying?

42-30831 WF-H known as Lazy Baby although I don't know if it was ever painted on the A/C. There are several photos of the aircraft taken after it belly landed in Switzerland that appeared in an issue of Air Classics. Have you read the book "Wrong Place! Wrong Time!" by George Kuhl?
