Since Libya is in the news these days, I thought I would post this photo. This was taken out the right side of 53-0044 after touch down at Wheelus AB, Libya, in June 1963, as we were heading to Africa from Chateauroux during the Congo Airlift.

Here is another of the surviving C-124's. This is 52-1066 at the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson. This is another former Dover AFB aircraft that I turned wrenches on and flew on as a crew member. During the Congo Airlift, she got off course on a flight from Chateauroux to Athens and was forced down by Yugoslavia Air Force fighters. She and the crew were held until after some diplomatic negotiations when they were released to return to Chateauroux.

Here is another of the remaining C-124's, 53-0050. She was also a Dover AFB aircraft and is now at the Hill AFB Museum. She was the third to last C-124 built.

Just a side note to the photo of "Old Shakey" at the NMUSAF ... The 124 is no longer open to the public for viewing. It has been closed for quite a while now.
For anyone planning on a visit for the first time, do not expect to go inside the Globemaster.

Jerry,
I guess the trend these days is to limit our access to our aircraft in the various museums. However, at the Travis Museum, they opened 52-1000 for me an my family to go inside. I even had the opportunity to sit in my old seat. It was an emotional experience.

53-0049, sistership to 53-0050 above, when they were really alive. Transiting the Goose, winter of 59/60. Just a small part of a work day for Transient Alert.

Thanks for posting. 53-0049 was a Dover AFB C-124 also. Note the 1607 ATW "yellow and blue" crest just below the U.S. Air Force and tail number. We flew the northern route out of Dover to Goose, Thule and on to Europe several times a day. I was at Dover from 1958 until 1966.

This is 52-1000 at the Travis AFB Museum. The museum occupies the building that was the base commissary when we were assigned at Travis. The aircraft are parked on what was the commissary parking lot. The flight engineer on her last flight(to the Travis Museum) was Troy Woods; A good friend and fellow retired CMSgt.

This is 52-0994 at the McChord AFB Museum. This is not my picture and I hope whomever took it doesn't mind us using it to complete the posting of photographs of the nine
remaining C-124's.
It is interesting to note that 52-0994 borrowed the engines from 52-1000 at Travis in order to fly her on the last C-124 flight.

there is one at the hill afb museum in roy utah, north of salt lake city. i dont have a picture, but i have been to the museum.

Im glad to see one in day glo still. I really like this scheme. Thanks for the photos. I love the 124!

Reference the Day Glo paint; We had a big rush project to remove the Day Glo from our C-124's in the fall of 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We didn't have time to get all of the aircraft into our Dover paint stripping facility before we deployed to France in early 1963. Here is 53-0027 at Chateaurox in March 1963 with aluminum paint applied over the Day Glo.
"Woops, Looks like someone dropped the #2 engine and broke it"
Take another look at the earlier photo I posted of 53-0044. You can see the very clean band of aluminum where the Day Glo had just been removed a couple months earlier.
