Hi everyone,

Don't know if this is the right forum, but I am thinking of Swissmustang for the response....

In 1976 the swiss air force bought the F5E Tiger, but they also evaluated the A7 Corsair. I would like to know why they choose the Tiger, and if anybody have some pics of the Corsair in Switzerland.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Greetings from Switzerland

Hi

sure I do have photographs (slides) of the A7's at Emmen - but they are buried somewhere in my thousands of slides. ~goes digging~

The Swiss AF was looking for an 'airspace guardian' (Raumschützer) in first place, to assist the Mirage III interceptors. This merely to replace the Hawker Hunter fleet in that role (remember the Hunters were by then equipped with AIM-9 Sidewinders).

The ageing Dh-112 Venom fighter-bomber fleet also was due for replacement, so the Swiss also looked for an aircraft with 'mud-moving' capabilities.

In the end, Switzerland bought the F-5E / F-5F's and the Hunters were then only used for ground-pounding duties (with about 60 of them modified to carry the AGM-65 Maverick) - some twin-stick Hunters were also modified with Jamming-Pods for ECM missions - the Dh-112 fleet eventually was retired in the early 80's - the last ones being s.o.c. in 1984.

Will post photos of the A7's when I find them (also the F-5 contenders used in this evaluation)

Cheers
Martin

For those of you who do not speak French, here it goes : )

"Merci Martin,

Means:
