Just to build off of this post, if it is at all possible please put something in your profile or signature that can help people identify you in real life. I know that there may be some hesitance to do that because people don't want to be harassed or spammed, but the flip side is situations like this where a known expert on a subject can be unreachable because they may not check their messages or WIX frequently. For example, my
situation the other day regarding attempting to reach "CoastieJohn" about Coast Guard Aircraft Record Cards. (I believe I have a lead on this by the way, so stay tuned.)
If you're concerned about being bothered in real life, consider adding some contextual information that doesn't personally identify you, but can be used to find you with a little bit of effort. For example, which museum or organization you're associated with or a link to a personal website. This sort of indirect connection will be enough to ward off spam bots or looky-loos, but allows someone who has a legitimate reason to reach out to contact you with some dedicated effort.
For those specifically concerned about scrapers grabbing emails addresses, don't forget that, although not perfect, you can
munge them by changing characters or posting it as a screenshotted image of text.
