"Finding Amelia" show on Travel Channel at midnite

A two hour program featuring aviator/historian Michael Carra searching the jungle of Papau New Guinea referencing the records of a WW2 Aussie Army patrol. They found a few things but not the 10. It was "Searching for Amelia", rather than finding. He is planning a second attempt. Midnite encore..

They should get in touch with TIGHAR: it seems they've found more in one TV programme than TIGHAR has in its existence.

I just do not understand the obsession some people have with trying to find her body or her wrecked plane. It's weird. How much money has been wasted over the decades that could have gone into more worthy and useful projects?

What do these people hope to do if they did find her? There'd be nothing left of her and Noonan, and not much of the plane, especially as they are all likely at the bottom of the Pacific.

It is a mystery - humans are curious creatures.

Not to mention I think if the wreck is ever found on the floor of the pacific somewhere, and its in good enough condition like the aircraft from the Lexington a few years back, serious money would be sourced to raise the wreck, stabilize it, and probably display it in a oceanic diorama at the Smithsonian in downtown Washington. I'm sure that's the end goal for most of these people. Can't say I wouldn't want to see it like that eventually too.

Never overlook the "fleecing the rubes" factor. (I'm looking at you, TIGHAR).

AE has always been a subject of fascination.
She was a big celebrity of her day, the "Lady Lindy" and all...
While several famous fliers of that period perished, few did so so noticeably. The disappearance kept the story alive for weeks, unlike a equally shocking crash like Wiley Post and Will Rogers.

Lately she's become a bit of a feminist icon, most recently prompting a well publicized photo op with then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the head of the TIGHAR club where she praised his efforts in searching for her.

And to be fair, every few years Amy Johnson's disappearance makes the news. People love mysteries.

There is absolutely no mystery about the death of Amy Johnson. She was chopped to bits by the turning propeller blades of HMS Haslemere which was attempting to rescue her, according to crew members, after she parachuted into the Thames Estuary having run out of fuel in bad weather. The Navy covered it up for decades. The captain of the ship also died of the cold having jumped in while attempting to rescue her. Her body was not recovered, but there is no mystery unless you count the guy who claimed his A/A gun shot her aircraft down because she failed to give the correct colours of the day, twice. That is also a very likely scenario as the Royal Navy were prone to shooting at everything in the air.

My pet theory is Earhart never existed. She was an alter ego of Lindbergh, who having broken all the male records decided to take on the female records and races too. You never see a photo of them together, and they look pretty identical. Which would make him a drag racer. Getting 'lost' was the best way for his charade to come to an end. :lol:

As you said no mystery about Amy, but as you point out there was a cover up and there are alternate theories...either of which kept the story of her death alive far more than it would have been if she perished in a routine stall/spin crash or died peacefully in bed.

Now if she died in bed with Lindbergh....:)

Yes Lucky, this a repeat. Apparently Discovery Channel ran it 1st last August. It was "New" to the Travel Channel when I ran across it and posted it. Travel seemed a weird choice for such "niche" subject matter....IMO.
