Hiawatha Mohawk was the son of Dr. Ota-ah-ka Mohawk and Hazel Levert Smith. He was born 23 Apr 1921 in Tampa, Hillsborough Co. FL and died 23 Jul 2006 in Perry, Taylor Co. FL. He married Myrtis McLeod Culpepper in Perry Co. FL 10 Aug 1944. He was a graduate of Pearl River County Agricultural High School in Poplarville, MS. He worked as a welder prior to entering the Air Force in December, 1942. He was a fighter pilot and flew more than 47 successful missions in Europe during W.W. II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945. Hiawatha Mohawk (O-800022) served with the 325th FG, 319th FS [MTO] in WW2 - assigned a/c #79 "The Blonde Squaw"
